New Product on Sale Wednesday February 12

Our phone is currently not working. Comcast is being Comcast and we will hopefully have it back up and running in the next day or so. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Rarely has the title of an event so perfectly mirrored the world around us. Ryan North has been killing it on Fantastic Four (and literally anything else he's been writing) so I am expecting this to be the best version of Doom since Secret Wars.

From the solicit, "Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme - then disappeared behind Latveria's closed borders. For most, there's enough going on in the world that Doom's absence is not a priority, and some time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize it for what it truly was...the calm before the storm. It is a storm that has now arrived. The world has woken up to a new reality: Doctor Doom, Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, has magically taken over every broadcast medium on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World - the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth's leaders seem to be going along with this. Luckily, whether it's mind control or Doombots, whatever's affecting them hasn't affected Earth's heroes - and so they quickly form a strike team to stop Doom's machinations. But will they succeed? And what happens when some begin to welcome their new Emperor with open arms, clamoring for One World Under Doom?"

On Sale Wednesday!

For those of you who have taken us residence in the guest room under Patrick Star's rock we have moved! Saturday February 1 we opened at 9209 Midlothian Turnpike. We are 5.8 miles away from where we were which is basically Nebraska in Richmond miles but I can say as someone who has made the drive back and forth roughly seven billion times in the last six weeks; it ain't so bad! We are only 12-15 minutes from the old spot depending on traffic.

The second most question I've been asked over the past few weeks (right behind "where are you moving to?") is "What is going on with Diamond?" If you don't care about my thoughts on what's going on with Diamond please go ahead and skip down but not too far because this Diamond stuff is going to lead into some very important information about future ordering.

I'm going to start off by saying I am a fan of Diamond. I like the people I have met and I appreciate how hard Steve Geppi has worked for the direct market comic book industry for decades. Three times by my count Steve and Diamond saved a good portion if not the entirety of the direct market. The distribution collapse that lead to the formation of Diamond, Marvels bankruptcy and the backlash from pretty much everyone and in 2020 during the pandemic shutdown. People much smarter than me can wax poetic about those things but I was there to see the devastating effects that would have happened if not for Geppi. That's not to say I agree with everything they've done. It was a widely known secret that Diamond used shipping as a profit center but on the flipside of that they seemed to reinvest that money (five million dollars of it anyway) into a state of the art warehouse and pick system. Retailers will argue whether that was a positive or a negative but that isn't my point. Some shady business practices were done for decades but some of it resulted in positives. I'm not going to judge it but I understand the anger about it.

For anyone paying attention the bankruptcy wasn't really a surprise. Losing the five biggest publishers in such a short span had to have been devastating to their bottom line. The least amount of money per unit to be made is from distribution. That is true in any industry, not just ours. As much as I like the people at Diamond their business practices never really changed over the years. Being overcharged for shipping was annoying but when they were the only game in town there wasn't a lot I could do about it. When distribution split I did the math and it made more financial sense to move everything I could away from Diamond. Our margins are already pretty slim and losing up to 11% on every product just wasn't feasible. I hoped for Diamonds success but I also can't justify sabotaging my own success for theirs. I very much hope they survive this upheaval and wish them nothing but the very best.

All that being said, my confidence in the products we get from them is at an all time low. Books have been at least one week behind schedule for four months and that doesn't look to be getting any better. My big concern now is Pullbox and Comicsuite. The systems we use to place our orders and pull our books. Steve and I started talking about moving away from them even before he officially bought Richmond Comix. We are moving to a new POS system called Comic Shop Assistant. I will be posting more about that over the coming weeks but for now just keep ordering how you have been. If you've been using Pullbox just keep doing that.

Monthly catalogs have always been the backbone of ANY retail business. Even moreso for one like comics where we really rely on preorders to figure out how many extra copies we should order. Everyone has a digital version of their catalogs so I am going to start linking them in the booklist every week. Diamond does not offer a free online version of their catalog at this time.

Next week I plan to talk a lot more about preordering by FOC. I figure I have gone on long enough this week. And now...

...The Booklist!!

TONGUES HC VOL 01

$35.00

PANTHEON BOOKS

(W) Anders Nilsen

Set in a version of modern Central Asia, Tongues is a retelling of the Greek myth of Prometheus. It follows the captive god's friendship with the eagle who carries out his daily sentence of torture and chronicles his pursuit of revenge on the god that has imprisoned him. Prometheus's story is entwined with that of an East African orphan on an errand of murder, and a young man with a teddy bear strapped to his back, wandering aimlessly into catastrophe (a character readers may recognize from Nilsen's Dogs and Water). The story is set against the backdrop of tensions between rival groups in an oil-rich wilderness. Tongues is both an adventure story and a meditation on human nature in our present fraught, historical moment.
